What LC-MS is
Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) combines a separation step (LC) with mass detection (MS). The chromatography separates components, and the mass spectrometer measures their mass-to-charge ratio, which helps confirm the identity of the target compound.
What LC-MS can indicate
- Identity confirmation by matching measured mass to the expected mass of the target compound.
- Detection of certain impurities or related substances by their mass.
- Supporting evidence alongside a purity estimate from chromatography.
Why identity confirmation matters
A purity percentage answers “how much of what was detected is the main peak,” but it does not confirm that the main peak is the intended molecule. LC-MS helps address that gap by providing mass-based identity evidence. For some research compounds, this identity confirmation is the most valuable part of a testing record.
Reading an LC-MS record
Look for a statement that the measured mass matches the expected mass of the compound, along with the batch, date, and method context. As with all testing, an LC-MS result applies to the specific sample tested.
